St. Al’s Meatloaf and Gellman Foundation

This passed Saturday at the soup kitchen was one of the most productive we’ve had in a long time. We had our wonderful group from St. Al’s of Caldwell come down and serve up some delicious meatloaf. Which was just perfect because piping hot gravy and a cold day go together like no ones business! Also helping out were students from NJIT who wanted to get involved and assist in anyway, whether that be cooking, cleaning or serving they were willing to help. Finally we had the Gellman Foundation offer us a hand distributing clothes and other necessities. We are thankful for everyone’s effort this weekend in offering assistance to the guests of St. John’s!

It’s always hectic Inside the kitchen on a Saturday and this weekend was no exception. Inside, the kitchen was warm, while outside our guests waited patiently in the unseasonable cold weather. The reward for their patience would certainly be worth it. On a cold day, gravy and mashed potatoes served up alongside meatloaf is the kind of stick to your ribs, soul warming food that brings many of us back to a simpler time. It’s great to have a group such as St. Al’s that we can count on time and again to deliver a wonderful meal for our guests. We are thankful they could make it down again, and were also grateful that the Gellman Foundation made the wait slightly easier.

Unfortunately because it was so busy I was unable for capture more photographs of the wonderful work the Gellman Foundation was doing. In cooperation with St. John’s and those volunteers working in conjunction with the Gellman Foundation, we were able to distribute clothes, shoes, socks and coats to men, women and children that needed them. We even had a few toys for the children, and we did our best to assist those who needed it the most. Keep us in mind, the winter season is upon us and we are always in need of footwear at St. John’s, especially boots during the more challenging times of year.

As we at St. John’s soup kitchen try to broaden our horizons, and push ourselves to do more, we aim to cooperate with other organizations, so that together we can do more to assist the guests of St. John’s. Our mission is to help the guests of St. John’s, and we appreciate everyone who is willing to aid us in our mission. Look forward to more updates like this, and if your group or organization has an idea that you think could help, please email us at volunteer@njsoupkitchen.org we’d love to hear from you!
