Fried Chicken Friday!
Not too long ago Rachel contacted us explaining that she was getting married soon, and that for her bachelorette party she wanted to do something different. Rachel and her bridesmaids wanted to sponsor a meal at St. John’s. We were very excited about this proposal and agreed that it would be an excellent thing to do. In addition to sponsoring the meal, the young women all wanted to volunteer for the lunch service. It was a great idea and once we had availability we asked if they wanted to come down. They said yes! When they came down they were cheerful and excited to be at St. John’s, it was an experience that we all won’t forget. It was a great idea to serve others in preparation for her wedding. I guess we have to add that to the list of things we do at St. John’s! We agreed that we’d serve fried chicken for our guests, which is a crowd favorite. The only thing left to do was find someone willing to make us 600 pieces of chicken by 10am!
It was one of the more humbling groups we’ve had down at the soup kitchen. It’s a good reminder that there are people all around us that are willing to help those less fortunate. We are extremely impressed by the dedication they showed to those that are less fortunate. When their time was most valuable to them they decided to offer it to charity. St. John’s is founded on that idea, taking care of those less fortunate than ourselves.
We are thankful to our regulars who come on Friday for being so welcoming. We appreciate your dedication, showing up every Friday with few exceptions and welcoming all newcomers. It helps our new volunteers get involved and shows the spirit of the kitchen so we’ll. Volunteers, new and old, are the lifeblood of our soup kitchen and we look forward to more events like this at St. John’s. Our volunteers and guests should always feel welcomed. We are so grateful to Rachel and her bridesmaids and we wish her a long, healthy and happy marriage. Congratulations Rachel!
