Lasagna Saturday!
Saturday is the most eventful day of the week at St. John’s. People are off work so more people are able to participate in the lunch service. The groups are all experienced, and set to work with practiced hands. We are grateful for that, and this weekend we had the privilege of sharing the late morning and early afternoon with the fine folks of Our Lady Mother of The Church of Woodcliff, NJ. The meal was entirely prepared by them and each one of the members made a different lasagna. They all followed the same recipe, spinach and ricotta lasagna, but they were all slightly different. If I had more time I would have liked to try them all. I was able to do some “quality control” on a small piece and it was delicious.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a photo of the prepared meal, but the lunch had a generous portion of lasagna and a huge side salad. The fresh garden salad with light dressing was the perfectly compliment to the heavy lasagna. Savory and refreshing in one plate! We don’t often serve lasagna at the kitchen, so it’s really a nice departure from our regular meals. Putting “Lasagna” on the menu board always puts smiles on our guests faces when they come for breakfast!
It’s important to serve great food and that is the mission of St. John’s. Our intention is always to serve great food to our guests. But, it’s also important that at St. John’s the kitchen is a warm and welcoming environment. Simply said the kitchen is supposed to be fun! And this Saturday was certainly fun. It’s special when you can do something for someone else and also have a great time. Giving back to the community and connecting with people is what makes St. John’s special. The people of St. John’s, the volunteers and the guests, are what make it such a positive environment. I want to thank all of our volunteers for constantly reminding us of this everyday, and thanks again to all those who cooked and served for the lunch. We couldn’t do it without you!
